Chapter Seventeen

Angie sat at the kitchen table, the morning light filtering through the curtains, casting a soft glow on her breakfast spread.

Dmitri lounged on the chair opposite her, his eyes watching her intently as she enjoyed her morning meal.

“I’ve been thinking about Monica,” she said, breaking the silence after biting into a piece of buttered toast. “I suspect she might be involved in Yolanda’s murder.”

The cat’s ears perked up, his tail flicking thoughtfully. “Why?”

Angie took another bite of her food. “Remember how Kee mentioned that Yolanda had been secretly seeing Monica’s boyfriend? Monica found out, and things got really ugly between them. Apparently.”

Dmitri’s eyes narrowed, a thoughtful glint in their depths. “So, we have a motive: jealousy and betrayal. And we know Monica’s temper was escalating. But do we have any concrete evidence?”

“Not yet. That’s what I need to find next.”

She finished her breakfast and coffee, her spirits high. She felt certain that she would make progress in the case soon.

At the gallery later that day, Angie pulled Bella aside while they were dusting vases and sculptures. “Aunt Bella, I was hoping you could teach me some minor truth spells. Something subtle that could help in my investigation into Yolanda’s murder.”

Bella’s eyebrows shot up in surprise. “That knowledge is not to be taken lightly, Angie. Revealing truths can be dangerous in inexperienced hands.”

Angie nodded, her expression serious. “I understand completely. I would only ever use the skills with the greatest care and wisdom.”

Bella considered her solemnly for several moments before replying. “I will teach you the basics of reading auras to detect deception. But you must swear to keep this to yourself and wield it responsibly.”

“Yes, of course. I know that using magic isn’t child’s play. I will be super careful.”

At Angie’s eager assent, Bella led her to a secluded corner. “Focus on reading the subtle energies around someone to reveal distortions when they lie. But this is only a tool - follow your instincts first.” She cleared her throat. “The spells I will show you are more like ripples than waves. Think of dropping a pebble into a still pond - you create gentle rings that spread and reveal what lies beneath the surface.”

Bella took Angie’s hands in her own wrinkled ones.

“Close your eyes. Focus your energy into the palms of your hands. Feel the tingle of power within you and direct it outwards.”

Angie concentrated, but at first, nothing happened. She frowned, focusing on clearing her mind properly. She started concentrating again, this time sensing a faint thrumming in her fingertips.

“Good,” murmured Bella. “Now picture your intent - the truth being revealed in subtle ways. A slight flush of the face when lying, a small tremble in the hands when hiding something. Minor tells, but illuminating.”

The thrumming grew stronger as Angie visualized discovering these little clues.

“Excellent,” said Bella, releasing her hands. “This spell allows you to detect small signs of deception otherwise missed. Use it discreetly and only when necessary.”

For the next hour, Bella led Angie through practicing sensing truths around the gallery.
